CFRI’s CF Wellness Programs were developed in recognition of the positive impact of physical movement and exercise upon one’s physical and mental health. The following programs — free to individuals with CF, as well as parents, spouses, partners and siblings of those with CF — address the physical and psycho-social challenges faced by those living with or touched by CF; provide opportunities to improve the physical and emotional health of those with CF and their family members; and provide opportunities for a global cystic fibrosis community to engage and support one another in physical activities.

Fitness Education Seminar Series
Online Class series taught by Taylor Lewis, MA, CSCS
Physical fitness and exercise provide a therapeutic benefit for individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) by improving quality of life, muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance. This five-part series of fitness education seminars provides a platform to learn the different components of physical exercise (Warm Up, Cool Down, Resistance, Endurance, Balance, and Flexibility) and how to incorporate them into your workout for optimal results. After each seminar, you will also have access to an online 4-week self-paced beginner-to-intermediate 3-day a week online training program that integrates the exercises discussed in the seminar.
The class is free to individuals with CF, as well as parents, spouses, partners and siblings of those with CF.
Each series component will start with a webinar on the first Thursday of the month. Each part is treated as a separate event – you don’t have to participate in the complete series.
Part 1: Movement Prep and Cool Down – Thursday, July 1, 2021
The essential component to a successful training program is the warm-up and cool down. This seminar taught warm-up and cool-down tips and exercises to help you maximize your workouts. Participants also received access to an online 4-week self-paced beginner-to-intermediate 3-day-per-week online training program that integrates the exercises discussed in the seminar.
Part 2: Resistance Training – Thursday, August 5, 2021
There are many ways to integrate strength training into your training program. This seminar is built to show you various approaches to progress your resistance training to build muscular strength and endurance.
Part 3: Cardiovascular Endurance – Thursday, September 2, 2021
Cardiovascular training is an essential element to building a balanced training program. There are multiple approaches to building cardiovascular endurance and capacity. From HIIT to longer duration aerobic training, there are benefits from both. This seminar discusses the importance of both and why varying intensity levels throughout a training program can benefit long-term cardiovascular gains.
Part 4: Core and Mobility Training – Thursday, October 7, 2021
The foundation at which you move is built around your core’s strength and endurance. To sustain that movement quality, you have to keep working on maintaining the integrity of the mobile and stable joints throughout the body. This seminar will discuss the importance of integrating mobility and core-based exercises into your training routine. Improving your flexibility is important; equally important is the ability to sustain it.
Part 5: Creating Your Own Exercise Program – Thursday, November 4, 2021
Creating your exercise program can be overwhelming. Many variables go into a personalized training program, and too often it seems easier to scrap building your personalized training program and take random classes throughout the week. This seminar is all about giving you the tools to develop your tailored training program, which is especially important for members of the CF community.

This six-week free online interactive class, starting on Saturday, August 28, 9:00 am PT (12:00 pm ET), will help you find calm and connection during this stressful time.
The instructor, Colleen Lewis, is a Certified Yoga Instructor and an adult with CF.

Physical Therapy Webinar Series
This five-part webinar series, presented by Nicole Irizarry, DPT, will address a specific topic each session, with demonstrations of techniques to address back pain, pelvic floor weakness, stretching, and more. You need to register for each webinar separately.
