Doug is a dedicated advocate for cystic fibrosis (CF) research and education. His eldest daughter, Anna, was diagnosed with CF when she was 11/2 years old and underwent a life-saving double lung transplant at Stanford Hospital in 2011. Despite her ongoing post-transplant health challenges, Anna became a champion athlete at the US and Australian transplant games and a devoted mother to her daughter, Zoe. Anna lives in Melbourne, Australia, with her husband, Terry. Doug’s wife, Robin, has published a memoir about her experience as mother of a CF child entitled “Love, Courage, and Miracles” and has also played an instrumental role in the creation of the CFRI annual “Embrace” retreat for CF mothers.

Doug’s younger daughter, Sara, was profoundly influenced by her sister’s struggles with CF inspiring her to become an osteopathic physician. She has since developed significant expertise in treating chronic gut disorders including CF-related digestive issues (such as DIOS). Sara lives in Novato, California, with her husband, Ian, and their daughters, Freyja and Maeve.

Professionally, Doug has over 40 years of experience developing cutting-edge technologies in the microelectronics, pharmaceutical, and life sciences industries. He has held senior leadership positions at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and numerous silicon-valley companies. Throughout his career, Doug has contributed extensively to scientific research and innovation, holding 18 publications and 47 issued U.S. patents. Doug remains committed to the pursuit of treatments for the 10% of people with CF who, because of their genetic mutations, cannot be helped by today’s modulator therapies.

Doug has served on the CFRI Board of Directors since 2014 and has been a member of the Research Advisory Committee (RAC) since 1983. From 1985 to 1996, he served as RAC Chair, helping to guide CFRI’s funding of its first 1 million dollars of innovative CF research.

Doug earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1983, following a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1978. He completed his undergraduate studies at California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering in 1975.
