Mother's Day Tea: A Quiet Non-Event

The Mother's Day Tea has evolved into a quiet but highly effective fundraiser. During the mid-1970's, when CFRI was a small organization, the tea made a relatively small amount of money. "In a good year, we made $4,000," reminisces Gail Wakelee, tea chairperson and volunteer from those early years. "We were thrilled when we had 30 tea senders."

Last year, CFRI recruited over 400 tea senders who sent invitations raising more than $173,000. Their participation and dedication are the keys to the success of the tea, and we always welcome new tea senders. Anyone who wants to help can send tea letters. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, brothers, friends and teachers are only some of our past participants.

As a tea sender, you will be asked to address tea-letter envelopes to friends and people you know. Each envelope contains an invitation to an imaginary fundraising event. Senders often jot personal notes on the card and include photos of their friend or family member who has CF. Before sealing, tea senders return these invitations to CFRI where volunteers add an informational brochure and a Bigelow Sweet Dreams Herbal Tea bag (donated by R.C. Bigelow, Inc.). They are mailed first-class.

If for any reason you cannot send invitations this year, a CFRI office volunteer will act as your secretary and address them for you. (You need to provide address return labels and a list of friends' addresses or instructions to send to previous donors on your tea list.) Ann Robinson reported that a volunteer acted as secretary for 20 busy folks last year.

We salute you, our tea senders whose names are printed (in regrettably small type) on this page. While you may indeed work quietly at home, CFRI wants to loudly proclaim appreciation for your dedication, talents and time. You are truly the backbone of our organization.
