Giving a gift of appreciated stock to Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc. (CFRI) is easy and can be rewarding in several ways. You will not have to pay capital gains tax on stock that has appreciated over the years. You will receive an income tax charitable deduction for the full-fair-market value of the stock on the date of the gift, and your stock gift will benefit CFRI by making possible our research and educational programs that are helping everyone with cystic fibrosis and their families.
Note: If you want to receive a letter of acknowledgement from CFRI for tax purposes, you must let CFRI know that you are making this stock donation. Brokers have no obligation to provide to charities the identities of the donators.
How Can You Deliver the Stock to CFRI?
Securities held by the donor: If you hold stock certificates that you wish to donate to CFRI, please let us know first and then contact our broker, Mr. Jim Kirwan at Smith Barney, Inc., 1-800-284-2405 for complete instructions. Your gift date is the date you mailed the certificates. The value of your gift is the mean of the stock high and low for that day.
Securities held by a broker: If your broker holds the certificates, instruct your broker in writing that you wish to make a contribution of securities to Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc. and provide details on the company and number of shares. Instruct them to transfer the stock to Smith Barney, Inc., DTC # 0418 for credit to client account #595-11130-1-7-093, Cystic Fibrosis Research, Inc. Send a copy of your instructions, along with a letter stating the purpose of the gift to the CFRI Executive Director at the CFRI office address The gift date is the day the securities are transferred to CFRI's account. The value of your gift is the mean of the stock high and low for that day.
