CFRI and the CF Community Lose a Beloved Friend
Anabel Mariko Stenzel
January 8, 1972 – September 22, 2013
The cystic fibrosis community lost one of its most beloved members on September 22, when Anabel Stenzel lost her battle with cancer at the age of 41. Ana and her twin sister, Isa Stenzel Byrnes, were diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) three days after birth; Ana and Isa’s parents were told that the girls would not live past the age of ten. Forty years and two lung transplants later, Ana continued to inspire those around her with her unrelenting commitment to CF and organ donation awareness and her will to live each day fully, in every sense of the word. Ana was consistently understated about her efforts and achievements, but her impact on the CF community is – and will forever remain – extraordinary. Ana is survived by her husband, Trent Wallace; her parents, Hatsuko Arima and Reiner Stenzel; her brother, Ryuta Stenzel; her twin sister, Isa Stenzel Byrnes; and her brother-in-law, Andrew Byrnes.
